Common Signs that Your Clutch is on its way out

South Africa has a strong culture of people who prefer to drive manual cars over automatic ones. There are plenty of advantages to of manual over automatic, there is no doubting that. But as you may have found out if you’ve ever owned a car, manual transmissions tend to need a little maintenance, restoration and replacement from time to time. However, it can be difficult to know when to act on a dodgy clutch. So, to make things a little easier for you, here are a few common signs that you’ll need to be replacing yours soon.

What’s that burning smell

In almost any situation, the smell of burning should cause alarm-bells to ring, so why would your transmission be any different?

A rubbery burning smell emanating from your transmission is never a good sign, and is usually caused by extensive damage to your clutch as a result of wear and tear which has gone unsolved for too long. In some cases, you might even find smoke billowing out of the bottom of your car for this reason.

This is often caused by riding the clutch extensively in slow moving traffic, which makes it essential for those that battle the traffic each day to have their clutch inspected regularly. If yours has gotten to the point where it has been brought to the attention of your nose, it is definitely time for a change.

My gears wont shift smoothly

Having difficulty when it comes to shifting gears is a common sign that your clutch is in need of help. The troubles generally begin with the reverse and first gears, so paying attention to the movement of your car in these gears will help you catch the problem before it worsens.

If your car is jittering when you go into gear, or is becoming more and more difficult to shift, it is likely because you’ll need to have your clutch replaced soon.

My car won’t stay in gear

One of the most common signs of a worn-out clutch is its inability to stay in gear. If you find your transmission is slipping soon after you shift, when going up a hill or when accelerating; when this happens, don’t think lightly of it, it is a sure sign that your clutch is on its way out.

Conduct regular inspections

Your car’s transmission is as essential to its performance and safety as it is expensive to replace. But with a little preventative maintenance, you should be able to keep your transmission in great condition for longer. So be sure to have your transmission regularly inspected and maintained by a professional.
