What Is A Dyno And How It Works?

There comes a time when everyone needs to take their gearbox in for repairs. You’ve probably heard that your engine and related parts will be rigorously tested on a dyno. You have probably pretended like you knew exactly what that meant and hoped the people who took your car keys from you knew what they were doing. Well after reading this article, the next time you take your car in for diff and gearbox repairs you’ll be able to at least make sense of what the experts are saying to you.

What is a dyno?
Dyno stands for dynamometer and is a machine that is used to measure the torque or the power produced by an engine or motor or any rotating prime mover. With regards to a vehicle, they are used to simulate the conditions an engine or gearbox may encounter, and evaluate shift timing and shift field of the transmission at different speeds.

There are various types of dynos that serve very specific purposes. The one that’ll most probably be used to test your car would be a water-brake dyno. Your car’s engine’s crankshaft or flywheel is hooked up to the dyno and when it is accelerated, what is known as a power absorption unit, begins measuring the torque of your vehicle. The absorption unit is made up of a rotational element or rotor and a stationary housing or stator. Torque is measured through the conflicting force created when the rotor starts spinning, as it spins the stator also wants to spin, this is prevented by a strain gauge. This strain is measured as torque. Horsepower is consequently calculated from the collected torque data.

What is a dyno used for?
The water-brake dyno uses water to provide the load but different dynos use different methods to produce desired loads. Eddy-current dynos use electric current that is created by rotating an element to create an electromagnetic field. Due to this you have very precise load control. What do they mean by load? Well when your car or truck is out on the road there are several factors putting strain on your engine. The chassis may take strain, the gearbox, the engine, and so on, a dynos job is basically to put a certain level of strain on the machine before it hits the road.
Other than being used to test torque a dyno can test a variety of other factors with regards to engine development activities.
