Selecting the Transmission Type that suits you best

Not all gearboxes are built equally; there are a variety of transmission types out there, all suited to perform better under certain situations. Because of this, selecting a transmission for your vehicle is something that should be approached with great care. Who you are and how you use your car will also have a major effect on what you need from your transmission; which makes for a whole lot of questions that need answering before you can select the system that is just right for you.

So, to help you make the right choice, here are a few of your own lifestyle factors that need to be considered before you can make a selection with any amount of confidence.

The daily grind or the open road?

Most South Africans purchase a car so that they can get on with their daily commute, which is perhaps one of the reasons why manual transmissions are so popular in our country.

Manual transmissions provide greater fuel consumption and control while maintaining lower RPMs on average highway speeds, which might make them more suitable to those that take long tips on a daily basis.

If, however, you find yourself stuck in heavy traffic at the start and end of each work day, an automatic transmission will make the commute more comfortable while eliminating the need to have your clutch replaced due to riding it in traffic.

What’s in tow?

If you are planning on doing any towing on a regular basis, whether it’s a trailer, other vehicles, a caravan or a boat, you may decide to go with a large V8 engine for the job. Unfortunately, most vehicles in this class (other than bakkies) are generally only available in automatic transmissions.

However, in the case of bakkies, you might find that manual transmissions tend to have a lower rating than automatics.

This makes it a choice between fuel-efficiency and towing capability, so making the wrong choice could cost you money in the long run. So, if you are not planning on towing on a regular basis, opting for manual might suit you better.

Going solo or with a crowd?

Smaller vehicles tend to perform differently when loaded with passengers as opposed to when seating the driver alone. Because of this, manual transmissions in these vehicles might underperform, so when test driving a car, try to bring the whole family along if possible, so that you can test the car’s performance when it is full.

If a packed car is exceeding 3000rpm when at high speeds (so test it on the highway), you’ll be paying for it later in terms of maintenance and fuel consumption. You might then find that an automatic transmission in the same class would be more fitting.
