Transmission Maintenance and Repairs: Can You do it Yourself?

Many car owners believe that by conducting repairs or maintenance on their vehicle’s transmission systems by themselves, that they could save a fortune on money, time and hassle. While there are both advantages and disadvantages to this approach, for the most part, the layman simply doesn’t know enough about the inner workings of their vehicles to be able to do this safely and effectively. So, the question stands; can one conduct their own repairs on their car’s transmissions. There is no simple ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answer to this; though one thing is for clear; DIY transmission maintenance is simply not for everyone; and in this article, I aim to explore the reasons why.

Manual vs. automatic transmissions

You might know your way around a manual transmission system well enough to conduct repairs on them, but these days, more and more cars are coming out with automatic transmissions which are far more complex in their workings. This means that they are significantly more difficult to fix without prior experience, and leave a lot more room for things to go wrong. Because of this, especially if you have an automatic transmission, you should rather have it serviced by a professional.

The right tools for the job

Repairing a vehicle transmission of any type requires the use of specialised and expensive tools. These tools themselves often need specialised training to be utilised to their potential. It is unlikely that you will have what you need for the job as part of your home-toolbox, which means you would need to doll out money on tools, money that should rather be spent on a professional service.

Sourcing the correct parts

If you are not a mechanic, chances are you won’t know where to begin sourcing the correct transmission parts for your vehicle; and even if you do, how can you tell if they are in good condition or not. Working with these components requires specialised knowledge and experience, which you most likely don’t have; which opens the risk of you wasting money on parts that you shouldn’t be using.

You cannot give yourself a warranty

There is no warranty on your vehicle parts if you install them yourself, which should be enough of a reason to leave it up to professionals who can offer you one. Without a warranty, you may find that later replacements, repairs and services end up costing you far more than they should, simply because you opted to do it yourself at some point.
