When it comes to auto gearbox faults, your best option is to consult with an experienced technician. Here at Mayfair Gearbox we have been repairing and replacing automatic gearboxes for more than 30 years.
No matter what the issue, our technicians can provide an affordable, long-lasting solution. With our diagnostic checks and advice, we can inform you what the problem is and how much it’ll cost to repair.
In the event that a replacement would be cheaper than repair, we have a range of reconditioned Renault automatic gearboxes available – a very cost-effective way of replacing your faulty gearbox should it be beyond repair.
Renault Gearbox Repairs
The Renault DC4 is a common gearbox in later (post 2010) Renault automatics. Dual clutch gearboxes have been around for some time and are an efficient third generation design offering smooth and quick gear changes with none of the losses usually associated with torque converters of older transmissions.
Think of the twin-clutch transmission as essentially two separate transmissions with a pair of co-axial clutches between them. One transmission provides first, third and fifth gear, the other provides second, fourth and sixth gear (and also reverse). There are several useful videos on YouTube showing this operation.
When you drive away from rest first gear is selected on shaft 1 and second gear is already pre-selected on shaft 2 (which is idling). When it's time to change gears, the transmission simply uses the clutches to move drive from shaft 1 to shaft 2 for a near-instant change to second gear. The first shaft, now idle, immediately pre-selects third gear. At the next change, the transmission changes shafts again, engaging third gear, and the idle shaft 2 moves into fourth. The DC4 transmission (computerized controller) chooses the next likely gear change based on speed and driver behaviour and has the "idle" shaft pre-selected for that gear.
Electrical & Mechanical Failures
Even if the fault code suggests mechanical failure, e.g. of a clutch) can be attributed to electrical or software error. The gearbox control module is a fused ECU with external connectors. This module is software controlled and calibrated.
Electrical faults sometimes leave no fault code, or clear themselves. Similarly, clearing the code yourself can often give temporary relief from this type of fault (in different circumstances I wouldn't normally recommend clearing codes without rectifying the fault first). An electrical or software clutch issue can make moving from first gear to reverse impossible (they are on separate shafts). This will be accompanied by a clutch failure DTC and “Check Gearbox” warning light. If clearing this fault code solves the problem (even if only temporarily) then this tells me logically that the clutch has not suffered a mechanical catastrophe.
