Most-Common Problems With Toyota Land Cruisers

The Land Cruisers is iconic Toyota with outstanding performance. A powerful all-terrain performer favoured from Down Under to the Sahara, the Toyota Land Cruisers is dependable, loved by off-roaders and people with large families.

Despite its popularity, there are few reported issues from Land Cruiser owners.

Automatic Transmission Problem

It is no doubt that the transmission of a vehicle is one of the most important components of a vehicle.

The transmission problem is one of the prominent issues for Toyota vehicles. The transmission issue is common recently among Toyota Land Cruisers. The main transmission problem of Toyota Land Cruisers is the shifting issue which affects the smooth movement of your vehicle.

Possible Causes

In most Toyota Land Cruisers, here are the two major issues that cause the shafting issue:

  1.  The throttle position sensor is out of adjustment
  2. Shift solenoid needs to be replaced

Throttle Position Sensor Out of Adjustment

A vehicle needs a perfect mixture of air and fuel for it to run smoothly. The fuel pump provides the engine with the required fuel, while the air intake system controls the amount of air in the engine.

That is where the throttle system comes into play. The TPS is a vital component that controls the engine’s air intake.

Due to wear in the throttle body or carbon build-up, the throttle position sensor can become out of adjustment. The throttle position sensor in your Toyota Land Cruisers passes information to the engine computer as the driver steps on the gas pedal. Therefore, sensor failure will affect the vehicle’s speeding up rate, leading to either poor acceleration or no acceleration. In extreme cases, the issue can cause the activation of the check engine light.

The throttle position sensor is also in charge of gear changing.

Shift Solenoid Needs Replacement

The shift solenoid executes signals from the Transmission Control Unit (TCM) for upshift/ downshift. Inside the transmission, the solenoid is a spring-loaded plunger that is wire-wrapped.

When the TCM sends an electrical charge to this coil of wire, it opens the plunger, allowing transmission fluid to flow into the valve body and pressurise the clutches and bands. When this happens, the transmission shifts to the next gear and you continue on your way.

A transmission solenoid can fail due to two main issues:

  1. Electrical issues
  2. Dirty fluid

These issues change the transmission fluid pressure, leading to other problems, such as:

Erratic Shifting: A problematic transmission solenoid can cause the gearbox to skip a gear up and down, repeatedly shift back and forth between gears, or get stuck in a gear and refuse to shift.

Transmission Won’t Downshift: This happens if one of the shift solenoids being stuck open/closed, preventing fluid from entering the transmission valve body to pressurise the correct gear.

Delayed Engagement: For an electronically controlled automatic transmission to shift gears, the solenoid must be able to regulate the fluid pressure to activate the gear. A faulty solenoid affects this process, leading to delayed engagement.

Manual transmission Problem

Toyota Land Cruisers Manual transmission issues can develop because of high mileage, abuse, or lack of proper maintenance, however, they’re rather rare. Most Land Cruiser manual transmission problems originate not with the transmission itself, but from connected parts like the clutch assembly, linkage, or driveline: the parts that transmit turning power from the transmission to the wheels. The key to diagnosing your Land Cruiser manual gearbox problem is to collect detailed data concerning the actual problem.

Here are some symptoms which will indicate a worn-out transmission, all of which we discuss below:

  • Odd sounds (whirring, squealing, bumping, or thumping)

In Toyota Land Cruisers, the most common cause of a loud transmission is low oil, causing the gears or internal assembly to hum or whir. If a loud transmission does have enough oil, the lubricant could also be contaminated with metal shavings. Insufficient or contaminated oil might cause the Toyota Land Cruiser Gearbox to become noisy in some or all of the gears, however, if you hear noises in a specific gear, that gear’s teeth or synchroniser could also be worn or broken.

Reasons inside the Toyota Land Cruisers transmission, that may cause noise:

  1. A worn-out synchroniser
  2. The gears on the speedometer drive
  3. Misaligned transmission
  4. A worn or broken input shaft bearing, if your transmission makes noises only in neutral (sometimes a bumping sound)
  5. Worn-out gears
  • Transmission jumps out of gear (into neutral)

Among Toyota Land Cruisers this appears to be a common problem on a worn-out transmission. You shift into gear, and the transmission jumps out of gear. Once again, there might be other causes for this problem, besides a worn-out transmission. A common problem is a worn out, stretched, or maladjusted shift linkage. A stretched linkage may be caused by a broken engine or transmission mount. An external linkage can wear out or become loose and maladjusted, causing the transmission to jump out of gear.

  • Difficulty shifting gears

This problem happens when you find it hard to shift the lever from one gear to another. Usually, this points to a problem with a loose linkage, worn shift cables or worn bearings.

Other causes for a hard-to-shift Toyota Land Cruisers manual transmission, include:

  1. Worn or loose internal parts (shift fork, levers, shafts)
  2. Low oil level (or the incorrect kind of oil)
  3. Misaligned transmission
  4. Synchroniser issues
